This might seem really off topic from my title but I have been thinking A LOT lately about where I am going to buy my socks......
I mean in the past this hasn't been an issue and I am going to be frank with you, it's been about (INSERT NUMBER OF BLOGS THE DAY HAS BEEN GOING ON) Plus that I have bought new fresh socks.
So anyway I am literally busting at the seams, or toes ;) and cannot decide where to buy my socks. This leads me to thinking about American Apparel and thus to the issue of immigration reform segwaying to the only ORIGINAL american's ....... the NATIVE AMERICANS (PHEW..ok I probably lost all of you there).
So I just don't get the deal 'people' have with immigration. NONE of us are originally from here (unless you are Native American then well quite frankly I am jealous...) so get over it! Let people who want to work here work here. Have you ever seen a clothing factory in America? They are insane!!!! These people work so hard (and actually get paid fairly well compared to farm workers at 11$ an hour!). So this is why I am thinking American Apparel. Yah they have a bad rap for their owner Dov Charney being a big womanizing douche, and that's not really ok because I am kind of a feminist but they are also a fairy progressive Vertically Integrated company and I give major kudos to that. They also has a vegan clothing line and back immigration reform (well duh to that but seriously.....I guess just growing up in agriculture I don't see the big dang deal).
While they have been raided for Illegal workers, and blamed for discriminatory practices, I think the pro's outweigh these cons. So i think when i go to buy socks I will get them from American Apparel. Plus THIS VIDEO about making socks in their factory is just really cool and so fascinating.
But anyway back to the Native Americans. I was standing in line at the grocery store with my mom in days past and our checkout man (who we always chose the same one because he is awesome and nice and well its just nice to know someone handling your foods). But he told us they just discovered his wife is descended from a Native American Princess from our area (from the Little River tribe). I just thought that was so cool, I even went to the library and saw photos of her. It really made me want to watch Pocahontas the oh so 'Westernized' version of Native American culture. Oh and did I mention I am reading The Absolutley True Diary of A Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie which is just freaking phenomenal (I mean really...and even if you don't like YA novels this is a MUST READ). That may be what started this whole thing....or it could have just been the socks.

Deletehaha ive never thought about where socks come from :) loving the gold accents! also there are a few local places (i think) that sell like bamboo socks or organic socks that might be worth looking into!
ReplyDeletemy issue is just WHERE they are made....90% of socks are made outside of the USA :) and as i will not buy USED socks its just i have to be more specific. But more and more companies are starting USA made sock entities so thats cooooL :D
