Typical.

A blazer? A tshirt? Some pantalones? And Shoes? Predictable!!!!!

Yes that is right. This is part of my go-to uniform in life. Layer it up. Zazz it up. Play it down. I love contrasting fabrics, textures and colors. I also like to take one idea and go allll the way with it. Or pair exactly what you wouldn't expect. But what would you expect from me? Nothing you could expect!!! Except maybe a typical blazer.

I started this conversation with my dad a few days back about pairing black and navy. "that cannot work!" he said and by the end of the conversation we both realized we are both wrong. It just depends on the color and how you do it. If you rock it I feel like you can wear whatever the F you want. Plus anyone who thinks you look ridiculous isn't going to say it to your face anyway unless you are below the age of 17 (or your good friend, or someone weird and judgy). So really who cares. Plus I actually enjoy pairing colors people say you cannot do....and then sticking my tongue out and being like poooppp on you :)

what vintage means to me. day one-hundred-seventy-five.

There is something to me about old things. They carry a history, I feel like I have to preserve some aspect of time by enjoying a piece that is no longer wanted. I have always enjoyed the art of old eras and what better way to display art than to wear it. I feel like every piece; from haute couture to handmade has a unique story. Each time I see a union label from the 50s/60s my heart melts a little for people working to make these pieces that have lasted so long. To me slow fashion and buying vintage go hand in hand. What better way to not support a flawed industry than to not buy into it at all. Instead of supporting unsafe working conditions, mass production and the misuse of resources I enjoy supporting companies that help feed and house the homeless, find forever homes for pets, educate children in Africa and help abused women find help.

On top of all that greatness they have my own story, where I wore them, what I did that day, how I handled them and wore them again and again. I want to add my story to the rich history of garments in the most positive way I can. I want to pass these clothes along and know I treated them well and enjoyed them the most. I will buy 'vintage' for the rest of my life. I love how I consume fashion. 

Rue really wanted to be in photos I think today. She's not really vintage but shes sure cute anyway :D

So do me a favor, just try it. The next time you are thinking of expanding your wardrobe instead of heading to a mall or you favorite online spot, just venture out and try a thrift store that supports an amazing cause. It's an easy way to support something you may not otherwise have the ability to support.

thrift trick fashion show. day one-hundred-twenty-seven.

Oh wow! I cannot even begin to describe what a great time I had at the Thrift Trick Fashion Show in Muskegon! It was so much fun and it was so awesome to finally meet Chantal and see her using all of her amazing skills and tricks. I took my mom with me and we had a BLAST! It was sponsored by Hope's Outlet Ministries. You have seen I support them a lot with my clothing purchases! I even got this vintage dress at their Grand Haven location!  

The space(Watermark 920) was beautifully decorated and I was lucky enough to get a backstage pass to check out all the lovely models getting ready! Everyone, including Chantal (see below) got all dolled up by the wonderful astheticians and those in training at Nuvo College of Cosmetology. 

On top of the clothes there were really cute decorations available for sale! 

The catering by Fatty Lumpkins Sandwich Shoppe was delicious! They even had a vegetarian sandwich for those of us who don't choose meat. 

Chantal of Thrift Trick was so gorgeous in her vintage outfit and was an amazing emcee! Below we see the co/owner and founder of Hope's Outlet - Kathy Tabor

The models were all so fabulous and the clothes were just so fun and amazing! 

I had a blast and give major kudos to Chantal (make sure you check out her blog!) for putting on such an amazing event! She even made time to put together a scarf upcycle and scarf tying station! I loved rocking this vintage dress in just my color red-orange.

buy nothing day. day one-hundred-six.

Good Morning! If you are reading this you likely are not out there being a "good little consumer" and buying absurd Chinese made things at ridiculous prices so, GOOD FOR YOU! Because today is the day I dread the most in this country. The day where people in this country literally kill in order to buy crap. It makes me really sad/mad and is quite opposite the point of this blog! There are so many other things that you could do for the day after Thanksgiving other than consume crap. Here are some ideas: 

Hang out with family or friends

Rent a movie and make popcorn

Volunteer your time helping people less fortunate than you (or animals!)

Read a book

Visit a museum or art institute 

Clean out your closet

Take a walk

Start a blog

Enjoy some quiet time 

So try something different this year (or if you are reading this late then next year i guess) and don't buy a thing. Its crazy I know but guess what the stuff will still be here and will likely go on sale again and do you think Grandma really needs that big screen TV? Just try it i think you will enjoy taking some time to slow down your life. Have a happy Friday!
